The Bike Results
Starting out initially I was in pretty good shape. I was playing ultimate frisbee on occasion, and biking 12 miles a day. As for weight, I started at 209lbs, and as of yesterday morning, I was at 202lbs. This is still well above the ideal weight for my height, age, and build. Weight loss, while a goal, wasn't my explicit intent with the project. Instead, I was looking to maintain the physical shape I'd been in. Maintenance is a pretty severe problem when enduring the 9 month winters in Alaska.
I was also able to hook up the system to a rowing machine, which, being a rhythmic exercise, lent well to the existing code. This was the inspiration for the "other exercise" mode, and also gave me the idea of perhaps in the future having multiple Arduino controllers with different workout specifications providing feedback for a Perl script. This... was a little more complicated than I was looking to get.
In addition to the rowing machine, I got used to doing calisthenics, sit-ups and push-ups as breaks to my main biking exercise.
Also, I may have given myself a hernia doing all this. Your mileage may vary. Consult a physician if you're unsure of how physical activity might affect your health.
